Darning Darling

私の夫は物持ちがとても良いです。

気に入ったらとことん使い、大事にします。

そのうち情が入って着古しても、お気に入りで捨てられなくなります。

そんな彼には愛用パジャマのズボンがあります。薄い水色で着心地バツグンのスウェットパンツ。聞けば十数年は履いているとの事。たくさん思い出が詰まっているはずです。付き合っていた頃はそのズボンのウエストのゴムがゆるゆるでも大好きで履いていました。引っ越すたびに「このズボンもう終わりじゃない？」とからかうと「取っておく」と大事にしまいます。結婚してからはさすがにそのズボンのゴムを新しく交換してあげました。

そして寒くなると夫は必ず毛糸の靴下を履いて寝ます。暖かく蒸れないでぐっすり眠れるそう。それは彼のブルガリアのおばあちゃんが編んでくれた毛糸の靴下。これもかなり年期が入っています。去年は虫食いで穴が空いてしまいましたがダーニングを習い始めていた私はその靴下を補修してみました。ブルガリアのおばあちゃんが「網目一つ一つに愛情を注いで編んでくれたんだろうな」とおばあちゃんの手の温もりを感じながら私も毛糸に愛情を込めて縫ってみました。「これからも長く愛されてね、靴下くん。」長く愛用される物もする方も幸せだな。

Darning Darling

My husband really takes care of his belongings.

If he likes something, he uses it to the fullest and takes good care of it.

Eventually, he gets attached to them and can't throw them away even when they become old.

He has a pair of pyjama pants that he loves. They are light blue sweatpants that seem comfortable to wear. He says he has been wearing them for years. They look worn out to me but they are full of memories to him. Whenever we move house, I would tease him by saying, "I think we’re done with these pants, aren't we?" Then he would say, "We are keeping them.”

When it gets cold, my husband always wears woolen socks to bed. He says they keep him warm and help him sleep well. They are woolen socks knitted by his Bulgarian grandmother. They are also quite old but beautiful. Sadly they got bug bites last year! I just happened to be learning darning then, I tried to mend those socks and gave them a second life. They look quite charming!  I thought of his grandmother as I stitched the socks, “She must have put so much love into knitting these socks.”

“I hope these will be loved for a long time to come!"

The things that are loved for a long time become irreplaceable precious treasures.
