Sensory Play That Sparks Kids’ Imagination

「今日は娘と何して遊ぼう…？」と悩むとき、地元のチャリティーが開催してくれるセンサリープレイが頼りになります。

メッシープレイとも呼ばれるこの遊びは、子供が口にしても安心なお米やカラフルなスパゲッティ、小麦粉粘土、光るボール、動物の模型、絵の具など、五感を刺激するアイテムでいっぱい。どれを触っても、散らかしても怒られない。子供にとってはまるで夢のような世界です。

もちろん家でもできますが、掃除が大変なのでこうした場は本当にありがたいです。準備する大人も大変だろうなぁと思いますが、話によると「どんな素材を使い、どんな世界を作るか」で大人の想像力も試されるそう。

今回の一番のお気に入りは、なんとベイクドビーンズでできた恐竜時代の世界。さすがイギリス！イングリッシュブレックファストでお馴染みのベイクドビーンズも、こんな楽しい遊び道具に変わるのかと感心しました。これからは食べ物を見るたびに、私の想像力も刺激されそうです。

When I find myself wondering, “What should I do with my daughter today?” I’m so thankful for the local charity-run sensory play sessions.

Also known as messy play, these sessions are filled with all kinds of materials that spark a child’s five senses—safe-to-taste rice, colourful spaghetti, homemade salt dough, glowing balls, toy animals, paints, and more. Kids can touch, explore, scatter, and mix without anyone telling them off. For them, it’s like stepping into a dream world.

Of course, you can do sensory play at home too, but cleaning up afterwards can be a nightmare—so having a space like this is such a gift. I imagine it must be a lot of work for the adults who prepare everything, but I’ve heard that it’s also a creative challenge for them: deciding what materials to use and what kind of little world to create.

My daughter’s favourite this time? A prehistoric dinosaur world made out of baked beans! I was amazed at how something so ordinary—part of a classic English breakfast—could be transformed into such a fun, imaginative play world. From now on, I think I’ll look at everyday foods a little differently—maybe with a bit more creativity myself!
