Love at First Sight This Summer

今年の夏、私はポートベロにあるお店のウィンドウに飾られてあった家具に一目惚れをしました。

あいにくその日お店は定休日。

家に帰っても忘れられないそのチェストは、やや小さめサイズで、表面はクリーム色にペイントされ、暖かみがありました。その上に細い筆で植物が描いてあり、なんだかとても品がありました。

「これをデザインした人センス良いなぁ、いったいどんな人が使っていたんだろう？」

私が特に気に入ったのはイラストの植物が秋のモチーフだったこと。なぜなら私達にとって今年の秋は特別だからです。家族が1人増えるのです。

夫に買うか迷っている事を話すと、「そのチェストは我が家に来る運命なんじゃない？」とのこと。「よし！」私は購入することに決めました。お腹の中にいるその子の事を想いながら。

早速次の日にお店に電話をしてチェストを届けてもらいました。

届いたチェストの引き出しの中に小さな赤ちゃんの洋服を丁寧にたたんでしまいながら、「この子が大きくなってもずっと使ってもらえるように大切にしよう」と、心の中で囁きました。

This summer, I fell in love at first sight with a piece of furniture displayed in a window at a vintage store in Portobello.

Unfortunately, the store was closed on that particular day.

Even after returning home, I kept thinking about it.

It was slightly small but had a nice-sized chest of drawers, painted in a warm cream colour, and featured beautifully drawn plants that made it sophisticated and elegant. I wondered who had used it before.

What I particularly liked was that the depicted plants were themed around autumn. And that was significant because this autumn was going to be a special season for us. Our family was about to grow.

I asked my husband what he thought about it and he said “It meant to come to us!” So we decided to purchase it with thoughts of the coming baby.

I called the store the very next day and had the chest delivered.

I carefully folded the tiny baby clothes into the drawers, ensuring that this chest would be cherished and used for years to come as our child grows.
